In recent years, Doug Richardson has served as program architect and implementation coordinator for a variety of sophisticated leadership development programs designed to improve the skills of existing legal leaders and realize the potential of high-potential lawyers. Designed to be "owned and operated" internally by a firm or legal department year after year, each leadership program is tailored to the strategic, leadership and succession priorities of the firm or legal department. Leadership program design focuses on practical and cost-effective approaches to:
- Assessing leadership aptitudes, strengths and development objectives
- Developing realistic, skills-based Individual Development Plans (IDPs)
- Individual coaching, whether provided internally or by respected external coaches
- Group workshops on leadership theory, law firm economics, marketing/business development, practice group management and performance management
- Assuring support and feedback from Senior Advisors within the firm
- Collaboration and communication among emerging high-potential leaders
Doug has served as architect and project manager for leadership development initiatives for major national multi-office firms undertaking rapid growth, specialized boutiques and smaller single-office law firms. He also has worked with the legal departments of large publicly-held corporations and cutting-edge entrepreneurial enterprises.
To provide skilled coaching support for both large and specialized leadership programs, in addition to his own coaching engagements, Doug has identified, trained and coordinated a superb pool of coaches nationwide, each either a former lawyer or consultant experienced in working with lawyers, many of whom also are Certified Master Coaches. These coaches, who contract directly with the law firm or legal department, are well-versed in the instruments and techniques employed in our leadership assessment process. All are familiar with developing insightful Individual Development Plans, and they understand how to strike the balance between providing practical guidance and respecting the enormous time pressures on most lawyers.
